In 2013 I applied for the Mandela Washington Fellowship. I did not succeed. I was not chosen. I had failed…

Oprah Winfrey, Bill gates, Walt Disney, Wisnston Churchill and J.K Rowling… What do these five people have in common? We can all agree they are very successful. Only that is not it…They were all epic failures. Not one of them was voted “most likely to succeed” in high school. Most of these leaders received terrible reviews, and get this, reviews related to the very fields they now excel in!

I can imagine how they might have felt after having failed. These great leaders were not looking for success or self glorification. They had a burning passion, a bigger purpose and a social commitment that was bigger than themselves. I also know why they too refused to stay down and to give up on their dreams. They made it about all those lives they wanted to change and the impact they wanted to create. Their dreams were bigger than their personal feelings and selfish needs. And so they fought back…

In 2013 I applied for the Mandela Washington Fellowship. I did not succeed. I was not chosen. I had failed. For a while I was torn, disappointed and I felt like a failure and I could have given up… But instead I did what everyone with a dream to big to let go of does. I picked myself up and tried again. And I am glad that I did, because today I am a Washington Mandela Fellow and a Young African Leader under construction. And my Journey has just began 🙂
